Plastic is NOT the problem.

Updated: Oct 31, 2021

Over the last decade, we have seen an exponential growth in awareness of the harmful impacts of plastics on our global ecology, environment and economy. In many ways there has been a mass demonising of plastic manufacture, use and disposal in the media. Is this really justified, what did plastic ever do to warrant this kind of treatment?

Plastic is an inert substance that was created out of human necessity from as early as 1600 BC in the from of natural rubbers and evolved in the 1900’s to numerous chemical augmentations and eventually delivered one of planet Earth’s most prolific petrochemical substances in current 21st Century use.

In very real terms, plastic has made human existence convenient in a multitude of ways, providing us humans the capability to literally shape our world with very useful tools including car parts, food containers, chairs, computers, toilet seats, water bottles, packets and pretty much every item that allows our convenient lives, but at what cost?

Considerations for the environmental and ecological impacts of this highly versatile substance was never a real concern for the inventors and chemists back in the early 20th century. Ease of manufacture at a low cost were the overriding factors that motivated plastic innovation. Back then, there was a demand and industry provided a solution.

Now, this landscape has changed and evolved dramatically! Responsibility for plastic waste is being shifted from pillar to post, from house holds being asked to recycle plastics, to companies being asked to manufacture responsibly and city councils being asked to take responsibility for waste plastic, who is actually responsible for this plastic problem?

The truth is, we are ALL responsible for our part in the solution!

Inherently, plastic is NOT the problem, the custodianship and wise management of the substance however, IS! How we humans have interacted and behaved with plastic is what has caused the current ecological and environmental issues we all face.

With the recent advent of both the systemic socio-economic initiatives of Circular Economy activity and the whole system Cradle to Cradle® Design Framework, we are seeing highly impactful and effective solutions to our “plastic problem”.

Fortunately, there are many companies, small businesses and individuals who have begun to take responsibility for their part and are committed to bringing highly effective and innovative solutions to the fray.

Bayonix® has just released one of the world’s most innovative, practical and eco-effective cool liquid drinking bottles, yet! The product is Cradle to Cradle Certified™at the Gold level and attained Platinum for their materials health assessment, a truly amazing technical achievement.

Just over 2 years ago, Bayonix® company owner and chief designer Stefan Hunger partnered with Albin Kälin from EPEA Switzerland to create and develop the uber safe and circular materials for the Bayonix® bottle. Stefan is a man on a mission, he is highly passionate and focussed on making the most positively impactful, practical and ecologically responsible products for us to use.

Not only is the Bayonix® bottle addressing the material health and chemical composition of plastic, it also directly addresses the circular economy aspects of the responsible re-use of the materials, making the bottle one of the most effective, safe and circular economy ready products available in the world currently.

The versatility of the Bayonix® bottle includes an easy flip top that reseals effortlessly, a carabiner loop for ease of attaching to bags, climbing gear, utility belts and more. The ergonomic design also fits into commonly found bicycle water bottle holders/clips and fits snuggly into your gym bag or work satchel.

Once you have made maximum use of your Bayonix® Bottle, you can simply return it to Stefan via reverse logistics with the specially designed cardboard box he sent the bottle to you in. He will shred and re-pellet and reuse the plastic, to make another bottle.
